- Mahmut Yesari'nin en ünlü romanı olan Çulluk, 1927'de Milliyet gazetesinde tefrika edildikten sonra 1928'de kitaplaştırılmıştır. Mahmut Yesari, Çulluk'u yazabilmek için bir hafta Cibali Tütün Fabrikası'nda çalışmış, tütün işçilerinin sağlıksız çalışma ortamlarına ve kötü yaşam koşullarına tanık olmuştur. Romanın ilk bölümünde, köyünden İstanbul'a gelip tütün fabrikasında çalışmaya başlayan Murat'ın yaşadıkları anlatılır. İşçi sınıfının sorunlarının yanı sıra Murat'ın iş arkadaşı Münevver'le olan kararsız aşk hikayesi, etnik ve kültürel çeşitliliğiyle İstanbul'un sosyal yaşamı, Beyoğlu meyhanelerindeki hovarda hayatlar gibi birçok renkli konuya da değinilir. İkinci bölüm ise Murat'ın geri dönmek zorunda kaldığı köy hayatına uyum sağlayamaması, İstanbul'a gitmeden önce aşık olduğu Esma'yla kavuşmasının önündeki engeller, tütün kaçakçıları, kent-köy farklılığı gibi çatışmalar gerçekçi bir yaklaşımla işlenir.
