Une grande fresque historique et sociale, dans laquelle Hugo dénonce la misère et prend parti pour les déshérités. Dans son Discours sur la misère, en 1849, il appelle l'Assemblée législative à voter des lois contre la pauvreté et la misère sociale. Sa participation à la résistance face au coup d'Etat de Napoléon III en 1851 lui vaut plusieurs années d'exil, à Guernesey, et c'est là qu'il écrit Les Misérables. Ses funérailles en 1885 sont nationales : il est conduit au Panthéon, suivi par un cortège de 2 millions de personnes.
