Blu-ray Editorial Review
In this editorial review, Criterion's release of Luis Buñuel's film "El" (1954) has garnered a generally positive reception from viewers, particularly because it shines a light on a frequently overlooked era of the renowned filmmaker's career. The film’s restoration in 4K has been notably praised, boosting the allure of this satirical narrative that incisively critiques romantic obsession within the confines of a Catholic society. Many reviewers not only appreciate the brilliant storytelling but also highlight the insightful special features included in the release. Strong endorsements such as "one of the greatest films ever made" and "masterpiece" reflect the high regard in which fans and critics hold this title. However, there are some criticisms regarding the restoration quality, specifically the issue of a missing frame in the opening shot, which detracts from the overall experience for some. This has led to debate about Criterion’s restoration standards, particularly in comparison to other editions from rival distributors. Despite this critique, the film's compelling content and entertaining execution have resulted in a high recommendation from the majority of reviewers. **
